Lessons From The Lord’s Prayer (1)
Luke 11:1 NKJV
“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.””
The disciples of Jesus saw Him model the discipline of prayer and asked Him to teach them also how to pray. He taught them what we now call The Lord’s Prayer or Model Prayer. From Jesus’ teaching on prayer, we discover how the two keys of relationship and responsibility work to enhance our prayer life.
Matthew 6:9-13 NASBS
“[9] “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. [10] ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. [11] ‘Give us this day our daily bread. [12] ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. [13] ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’”
The Lord’s Prayer shows us that our relationship with the Father comes with responsibilities on the Father’s part, as well as on our part; and these responsibilities must undergird our prayer life. These determine the contents of our prayers – what we must communicate with the Father. Let’s discuss these responsibilities and what lessons we can learn from them.
1. WORSHIP AND REVERENCE
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name”
Our first responsibility toward God is to honour and worship Him, as our Father. God is a spirit, beyond human understanding and dwells in heaven and in mystery, and yet, He is our Father.
Therefore, we must approach Him in prayer within the context of our relationship with Him. By addressing Him as Father, we are acknowledging our relationship with Him. We can, therefore, come boldly before Him knowing that He has already accepted us, and we belong to Him.
However, we must also recognize God’s being and nature, that He is holy, and so we show reverence and honour to Him by acknowledging His holiness, and praising and worshipping Him for Who He is.
This creates a healthy balance in how we approach God as our Father. Addressing Him as Father rids us of apprehension, fear, dread or terror, as we approach Him in love; whilst acknowledging His holiness shows our reverence for Him and prevents us from getting familiar, presumptuous or disrespectful towards Him.
It is our responsibility to honour and worship our Father with reverence; therefore, praise and thanksgiving and worship must be an integral part of our prayers.
Psalm 29:2 NASBS
“Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in holy array.”
Psalm 95:6-7 NKJV
“[6] Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. [7] For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand…”
Today, your prayer is for your relationship with the Father. Thank Him for loving you and worship Him for who He is.
