Attitudes For Worship (3)
John 4:23-24 AMP
“[23] But a time is coming and is already here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit [from the heart, the inner self] and in truth; for the Father seeks such people to be His worshipers. [24] God is spirit [the Source of life, yet invisible to mankind], and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
4. Worship In Spirit And Truth
Another attitude for worship to develop is to worship in spirit and truth. This is something that every believer must know because it was Jesus Christ Himself who instructed us to. However, do we really know what it means to worship God in spirit and in truth?
WORSHIPPING GOD IN SPIRIT
To worship in spirit means to worship beyond our natural senses – of what we hear, see, feel, think or touch. Worshipping in spirit has nothing to do with how we feel or what we think our experience has been. It is more than just speaking in tongues.
To worship in spirit is to possess an attitude of faith in God Almighty, who we do not see yet believe in, and love, yield and surrender to. It incorporates our trust, faith and belief in God who created us and all things, and who loves us.
Worshipping God in spirit is an attitude of the heart and posture of the spirit (or inner man), and includes our minds, intellect, wills, emotions, thoughts and understanding. Our whole heart and being must be engaged in worship for it to be in spirit and acceptable to God.
Deuteronomy 6:5 AMP
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and mind and with all your soul and with all your strength [your entire being].”
Any other form of worship is religious or ‘carnal’. ‘Carnal worship’ is of the flesh (feelings, wrong attitudes and lack of reverence, etc), and is unacceptable to God. On the contrary, worship done in the spirit of reverence, with sincerity and wholeheartedness is pleasing and acceptable to God.
WORSHIPPING GOD IN TRUTH
When we worship God in truth, our worship is based on the knowledge, understanding and revelation of Who He is. God is truth and our knowledge of Him and His word determines the level, depth and sincerity of our worship.
The greater our revelation and knowledge of God – His nature, character, ability, power and truth – the deeper and sincerer our worship is.
a. To worship in truth is to worship by knowledge and revelation of who God is. God is truth and has revealed Himself to us in His word. Our knowledge of God’s word and how we live in obedience to it empowers us to worship. In reality, we cannot truly worship who/what we don’t know and love. That form of worship is a mere religious exercise, as expressed by Paul.
“Acts 17:22-23 NKJV
[22] Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; [23] for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you”
The word worship in this text is the Greek word, ‘eusebeō’, which means to act piously or reverently (religiously). This type of worship is a mere outward religious expression and is not based on knowledge, truth and love.
b. To worship in truth is to worship by knowledge and experience of God’s love and care. The bible tells us that our love for God is a mere reflection of His love for us. Hence, our love for God is influenced by the level of revelation we have of His love for us.
1 John 4:19 – “We love Him because, He first loved us.”
This love relationship between God and us is the foundation of worship: the level at which we perceive and receive God’s love for us determines how much we love God and how we express that love in worship.
Therefore, to worship God in truth, we must have a revelation of God’s love for us and respond to that in thanksgiving, praise, adoration and surrender. This is what makes our worship experiential. Our experience of God opens our eyes to Who He really is. This generates instant and more worship from us. Our experiences of His love, provision, protection, deliverance, etc, elicit worship from us.
The Cycle of Worship
The more we know God, the more willingly we surrender and yield our lives to Him in worship …The more we worship Him, the more He reveals Himself to us …The more He reveals Himself to us, the more we love and worship Him… This is the cycle of worship!
