The First Commandment For Worship (1)

Jesus gave us two commandments for worship, which are the two commandments for life. These two commandments summarise the entire Law – 613 commandments – given to Israel by God.

Mark 12:28-34 NLT
“[28] One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” [29] Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. [30] And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ [31] The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” [32] The teacher of religious law replied, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other. [33] And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.” [34] Realizing how much the man understood, Jesus said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

The first commandment that Jesus gave is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. The second commandment is to love your neighbour as yourself.

LOVE THE LORD

We learnt so far that worship is a matter of love, and so, a matter of the heart. Our God is not an idol that we merely bow before and make sacrifices to. God is a person, who desires and requires a relationship with us.

Therefore, worship is a relation of love between us and God. We ought to know without a shadow of doubt that GOD LOVES US. He loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die for us and reconcile us to Himself. ( John 3:16 )

In return, we must grow to love God from the heart, and love Him so deeply that it transcends our souls, occupies our mind and takes up our strength. We cannot truly worship God without developing this heart of love, a love that surrenders heart, soul, will, mind, and strength.

However, this is a love that also demands obedience, for there is no love for God without obedience to God. To love God is to obey Him; and our obedience to Him further deepen and enhances our relationship with Him.

John 14:21; 23 NASBS
“[21] He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” [23] Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.”

If you love God, you will always desire to live in obedience to His Word. A true worshipper of God, therefore, loves God and lives in obedience to God and His Word. A true worshipper fears and honours God by doing what He says. AMEN!

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2026: “BEHOLD JESUS CHRIST”

“When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. [13] And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. [14] His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. [15] His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. [16] He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.” [Revelation 1:12-16]
