Lessons From Moses’ Tabernacle (8)
One cannot think of the worship associated with Moses’s Tabernacle without thinking about the Priesthood. This is because without the Priesthood, there would be no worship. All the various articles in the Tabernacle would be mere showpieces if there were no priests to attend to them and use them for the worship and glory of God.
THE PRIESTHOOD
The whole tribe of Levi was chosen and set apart for the service of God. However, God asked Moses to set his brother Aaron and his sons apart and consecrate them as priests to minister before Him in the sanctuary, and attend to the sacred things in the Tabernacle. It was also their responsibility, as priests, to ensure the continuous worship of God by the people.
Exodus 28:1 NLT
“Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests.”
Leviticus 6:12-13 NLT
“[12] Meanwhile, the fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must never go out. Each morning the priest will add fresh wood to the fire and arrange the burnt offering on it. He will then burn the fat of the peace offerings on it. [13] Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.”
*Who is a Priest? *
A priest, Hebrew – “kohen,” is one set apart and sanctified to minister before God; one who ministers to God and so can minister to others; one consecrated to stand before God on behalf of the people; one consecrated to the service of the sanctuary and of the altar.
EVERY BELIEVER IS A PRIEST
It is important to first establish that, unlike in the Old Testament, every New Testament believer is a priest. Through the atonement of Jesus Christ, all believers have been given ACCESS TO GOD and made priests of God. Every believer, therefore, is required to function as a priest.
1 Peter 2:4-5 NLT
“[4] You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honour. [5] And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.”
Hebrews 4:14-16 NLT
“[14] So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. [15] This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. [16] So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
It is necessary and important to reiterate this and establish it in our hearts and minds: GOD IS EQUALLY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL BELIEVERS, and every believer has equal potential to worship God the right way by living uprightly, ministering before Him in the word, Spirit, prayer, praise and worship, and serving Him as it pleases Him. This is because we have all been made priests to our God, in Christ Jesus. YES, YOU ARE A PRIEST OF GOD!
1 Peter 2:9 TPT
But you are God’s chosen treasure—priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world.
We can discover our roles and duties as priests of God, by learning from the worship system that Moses instituted (which was a type, copy or shadow of the true priesthood). The priests performed a threefold role in worship: ministering to God, mediating between God and the people and ministering to the people by teaching and lead them in the worship, word and ways of God.
As New Covenant believers and priests, we are required to fulfil the same purpose and function, but in a more universal way, each person doing their part to ensure continuity in the worship of God.
