Lessons From Moses’ Tabernacle (10)
The second function of the priesthood is to mediate and serve as the link between God and the people.
Hebrews 5:1-3 NLT
“[1] Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins. [2] And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. [3] That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.”
MEDIATE BETWEEN GOD AND THE PEOPLE
Once again, we can learn from the Old Testament copy and pattern, to discover what is required of us as priests in God’s Kingdom. The priests represented the people before God; this was a mediatory (or intercessory) role and function.
The first mediatory role of the priesthood was to offer daily sacrifices and prayers to God on behalf of the people. They kept the fire on the Brazen Altar burning so that the people could bring their offerings to be burnt on the altar in atonement for their sins. They offered prayers for the people and incense in the Holy Place. Once a year, the High Priest went into the Most Holy Place to offer sacrifices for sin on behalf of himself and the people.
Exodus 28:29-30 NLT
“[29] In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chestpiece over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place. This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the LORD. [30] Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the LORD’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the LORD’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the LORD.”
The priests also sought God’s face on behalf of the people. The people inquired of and consulted with the priests to know the mind and will of God for them. The priests consulted with God, using the Urim and Thummim, to determine His will for the people.
Overall, it was the responsibility of the priests to lead the people in worshipping God in the appropriate manner and way. Therefore, anytime the priesthood broke down, or failed, the people went further away from God and disobeyed His laws.
WE ARE THE LINK
In the New Testament, every believer is a priest, not just those in the five-fold ministry. Therefore, it is the responsibility of every believer to be the link and fulfil the mediatory role between God and the people around us (including the unbelievers). We are to be the link between our families, communities, society and nations, and God.
Remember that through His sacrificial death, Jesus Christ removed the barrier of sin and given us into the presence of God. ( Hebrews 10:19-22 ) We can now boldly enter the Most Holy Place in heaven, the very presence of the Living God, by the Blood of Jesus, and make prayers and intercession for ourselves and others.
Hebrews 4:16 NKJV
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Unlike the Old Testament priests who met with God in the earthly tabernacle, to mediate between Him and the people, we have been given access to the heavenly tabernacle, the very presence of God, and we been raised and seated in the heavenly places in Christ.
Ephesians 2:4-6 NKJV
“[4] But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, [5] even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), [6] and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
As New Covenant priests, we do not need the Urim and Thummim, we have the Holy Spirit living and indwelling us, giving us access to the mind of Christ. We can know what God desires for the people, through the Holy Spirit and His word.
