Lessons From Moses’ Tabernacle (11)

*WORSHIP AND INTERCESSION *

We learnt from Moses’s Tabernacle that the priesthood was an integral part of worship – the priests ministered to God and also led the people to worship Him in a way that was acceptable to Him.

We also have been set aside in Christ and made priests to our God. As we minister to God in the word, the Spirit and prayer, we qualify to mediate between Him and others. We are enabled to represent God in the lives of people and represent the people in His presence.

Intercession, therefore, is a necessary and very important part of our role as priests, as we, the Church of Jesus Christ, stand as the link between God, the people, the land and the nations. ( 1 Peter 2:5 )

STANDING IN THE GAP

This means that intercession is a necessary part of worship. To intercede means to stand in the gap on behalf of another. It is to plead or make petitions on behalf of another person. Intercession is a mediatory type of prayer where the focus is not on our own needs but on the needs of another or others.

On one hand, the intercessor stands before God on behalf of others concerning a need, and petitions Him to release a blessing in the area of need. The intercessor may also come before God on behalf of others asking Him to withhold judgement or to show mercy. This often happens when sin, rebellion and iniquity are involved and God’s anger has been stirred up.

Numbers 16:43-48 NLT
“[43] Moses and Aaron came and stood in front of the Tabernacle, [44] and the LORD said to Moses, [45] “Get away from all these people so that I can instantly destroy them!” But Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground. [46] And Moses said to Aaron, “Quick, take an incense burner and place burning coals on it from the altar. Lay incense on it, and carry it out among the people to purify them and make them right with the LORD. The LORD’s anger is blazing against them-the plague has already begun.” [47] Aaron did as Moses told him and ran out among the people. The plague had already begun to strike down the people, but Aaron burned the incense and purified the people. [48] He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague stopped.”

Intercession was an integral part of the worship system, instituted by Moses at the command of God, as a copy of that which is in heaven. The priests and High Priest made continuous intercession on behalf of the people, even to the point of stopping plagues!

Psalm 99:6 NLT
“[6] Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also called on his name. They cried to the LORD for help, and he answered them.”

When Jesus was on the earth, He interceded earnestly for His disciples, for Jerusalem and for the people; now that He is in heaven, as our High Priest, He continues to make intercession.

Hebrews 7:24-25 NKJV
“[24] But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. [25] Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

It is our role as priests, and an integral part of our worship, therefore, to stand in the gap as mediators between God and others.

1 Timothy 2:1-6 NLT
“[1] I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. [2] Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. [3] This is good and pleases God our Savior, [4] who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. [5] For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity-the man Christ Jesus. [6] He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.”

All believers are expected to be intercessors. We are to pray for our nations, leaders, communities, families, etc, to ensure that there is peace, holiness and godliness around us. We are also to pray for the unsaved to come to the knowledge of the truth about Jesus Christ, and be saved.

Isaiah 62:6-7 TPT
“[6] Jerusalem, I have stationed intercessors on your walls who will never be silent, day or night. You “reminders” of YAHWEH, take no rest, [7] and tirelessly give God no rest, until he firmly establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of all the earth!

No true worshipper of God would ignore this or be indifferent to this awesome responsibility. Indeed, our intercession must be earnest and continuous, and must never end until we see the results. ( Isaiah 62:6-7 )

During these challenging times, may we also be named among God’s priests, as we rise up to stand in the gap in prayer and intercession, on behalf of our families, communities, societies and nations. In Jesus’ name! Amen!
