Lessons From Moses’ Tabernacle (14)
FAMILIAR WORSHIP
God hates familiar worship; the form of worship that is not only religious but also very familiar. Familiarity is a dangerous thing; it was what killed Uzzah in 2 Samuel 6:1-8 . God had instructed through Moses that the Ark of the Covenant, which hosted the presence and glory of God, should be carried on the shoulders of the priests. However, they chose to carry the Ark on a cart driven by oxen, something they probably learnt from the Philistines. ( 1 Samuel 6:7-9 ).
Unfortunately, as the Ark was being transported, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out and touched it to stop it from falling. Uzzah died instantly because he violated what God had enshrined in the laws given to Moses, that no one should touch the Ark except the priests.
Setting our own standards for worship – picking and choosing from the scriptures, taking what we like and ignoring what we don’t like- is familiar worship. Borrowing worldly, new and so-called “modern” forms, systems and ideas for worship; worldly types of songs, lyrics, beats, sounds and dance; bringing in unbelievers to play instruments during our services (simply because they play well); adapting the entire worship experience to suit unbelievers because we want to attract them; the total lack of reverence for God and His holiness – are all like burning strange incense before God. This is familiar worship, and it is DANGEROUS!!!
Leviticus 10:1-3 NKJV
“[1] Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. [2] So fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. [3] And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.'” So Aaron held his peace.”
THE HOLY COMMUNION
Before His death, Jesus Christ instituted the “Holy Communion,” the breaking of the bread and drinking of the wine, to symbolise the breaking of His own body and shedding of His blood to remove the barrier of sin, so that we can approach God. Jesus encouraged us to take Communion as often as we can, as an act of worship, in remembrance of Him. However, this is another area in which we can become familiar, and this is also dangerous.
1 Corinthians 11:27-30 NKJV
“[27] Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. [28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. [29] For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. [30] For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.” SELAH!
There is the need for prayerful reflection and self-examination concerning these things. As the royal priesthood of God, the onus is on us to carefully consider these things and prayerfully adjust our lives, hearts and attitudes to worship and serve God correctly and uprightly, in a manner that does not only please Him, but also brings honour and glory to Him.
Acts 17:30 NLT
“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him.”
Thank God for the precious Blood of Jesus that cleanses all sin. Thank God for the indwelling Holy Spirit who is ever present and at hand to help us know and do what is right in God’s sight. May He help us, reveal to us and show us how to truly worship and serve God.
