Growing Deeper In The Word (4)

My Personal Journey With The Word (1)
Psalm 40:7-8 NKJV
“[7] Then I said, “Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. [8] I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.”
Once upon a time I DID NOT LIKE READING THE BIBLE! In fact, I found it so boring that I felt drowsy or fell asleep within minutes of opening it, to read it. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED reading; I even read whilst eating my dinner, which always annoyed my Mum. I loved reading novels, especially those Mills and Boon romance stories; I could read two of them in a day. BUT, I simply did not like reading the Bible!
WHAT CHANGED?
What changed? I fell in love with Jesus! This happened several years after I had become born-again. The Holy Spirit revealed Himself to me in a personal way, and I began to spend more time with Him in prayer; I also began to read my Bible more, although I still did not understand much of it. My relationship with the Holy Spirit deepened, and the more it deepened, the more Jesus and His love for me became real to me!
In 1997, I travelled to the USA for my sister’s wedding, and the Holy Spirit impressed on my heart that I needed to invest in bible study resources. It’s amazing that, at time, the internet was not so widespread and accessible; we certainly did not have immediate access to online bibles, commentaries, etc.
I had by this time developed a hunger for the Word, so instead of buying clothes, shoes and bags, I bought two large study bibles, as well as a Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary, a Concordance, a Thompson’s Chain Reference Bible and a few other books to help me read and study the Bible. Those books were big and heavy, so I put them in my hand luggage; it weighed several kilos!
When I got back home, I began to read one of the study bibles, “The Woman’s Study Bible.” I also began to read the Commentary and slowly learnt to use the Concordance and Chain Reference. Also, we had the entire set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, so I used that a lot for reference.
I bought several small note books, and gradually and gingerly, began to make notes; which I have kept by my bedside till date! I had no human personal tutor or teacher, only the Holy Spirit; as Jesus promised, He became my Teacher!
John 14:26 NLT
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative-that is, the Holy Spirit-he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
I believed the above scripture and so consulted with the Holy Spirit on all matters to do with reading , studying and understanding the scriptures. It is still my practice and habit to pause and tell Him, “I don’t understand,” “What does it mean” or “what are you trying to show me?”
My investment in the Word of God paid off! I grew stronger and stronger in the Lord, as the Holy Spirit used the Word to change me. I began to develop the Fruit of the Spirit, and people started noticing the change in me. However, the greatest dividend from my investment was that the word of God opened up to me. Not only did the Holy Spirit increase my understanding and knowledge of the scriptures; He also gave me wisdom to apply them.
Luke 2:40 NKJV
“And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.”
I hope my testimony encourages you to invest in reading and studying the Bible, because it will transform your life, and yield great rewards of eternal value.

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2026: “BEHOLD JESUS CHRIST”
“When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. [13] And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. [14] His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. [15] His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. [16] He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.” [Revelation 1:12-16]
