Why Do We Need To Study?
It is easier to do something, when you know and understand why you have to do it. Therefore, knowing why the bible instructs us to study should help us to actually do it.
The truth is that, as the Body of Christ, we have been given an assignment to proclaim the Gospel of His Kingdom to all. We are to baptise those who believe and disciple them to observe all that Christ has taught; so that they can become obedient citizens of the Kingdom. Ultimately, we are called, appointed and mandated to make disciples of all nations. ( Matthew 28:18-20 ).
We cannot make disciples without teaching; we certainly cannot teach without studying and learning ourselves. Although we live in this world, we are not of this world; therefore, we must gain knowledge about and become well-acquainted with the doctrines of the Christian faith and how to put them into practice. This is why we cannot afford to ignore Paul’s instructions to Timothy…
2 Timothy 2:15 AMP
“Study [be diligent and work hard] and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth.”
STUDY
The Greek word that the Amplified Bible translates as “study” is “spoudazō.” It means “to make haste,” “to exert one’s self,” “to endeavour,” “to give diligence, “to labour” or to “study.”
To study, however, means the following…
1. To devote time and attention to gaining knowledge of (an academic subject), especially by means of books.
2. To learn about a subject, especially in an educational course or by reading books.
3. To examine something very carefully; to look at closely in order to observe or read.
This is what Apostle Paul was admonishing Timothy and every believer, especially, those who are called into leadership, to do. We are to devote time and make the effort to diligently examine the word of God, in order to understand it, know what it requires of us and gain the wisdom to apply or practise it.
For two years, Apostle Paul taught the disciples daily in the school of Tyrannus, in order to disciple and ground them in the word; which caused the Gospel to spread among both Jews and Greeks. ( Acts 19:8-10 ). It is for this same purpose that Bible Schools came into existence, to teach, raise, approve and release Christian leaders.
My journey and experience with the word of God is unusual and different. However, many believers NEED to go to Bible School or attend discipleship classes, just to study and gain better knowledge and understanding of the Word of God.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
What do I need to grow in the word of God? What steps do I need to take to fulfil that need? When I am going to take those steps? After answering these questions, pray and ask for the Holy Spirit’s help. He shall surely answer.
