Why We Must Read And Study The Bible (1)
Why should we read or study the scriptures? Why is it so important to us? These are legitimate questions, as many Christians struggle to understand, memorise and live the Word of God. Yet, it is essential and beneficial for us to read and study the bible and obey its instructions. Let’s spend the next few days discussing some of the reasons why we must read and study the Bible.
1. GOD COMMANDS US TO
There are several reasons why we must read, study and obey the Bible. However, the most straightforward reason is that God commands us to. God has given us His word and requires us to read, study, know and apply it. We are expected to obey Him
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NLT
“[6] And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. [7] Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. [8] Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. [9] Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
Psalm 119:4 NKJV
“You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently.”
2. IT HELPS US GET TO KNOW GOD, OUR FATHER, BETTER
One of the best ways to get to know a person better is to listen to what they say and talk about. Studying the scriptures helps us to know God, because the bible contains His word and deeds.
God is not an inanimate object but a living Being. As we read, study and understand the bible, we gain revelation and insight into His being, nature, character and truth.
We learn through God’s word that He is a loving, merciful, faithful, gracious and kind Father. We also learn about His power, abilities, strength and other attributes. In effect, as we study the scriptures, God becomes real to us, and we get better acquainted with Him.
Jeremiah 9:23-24 NKJV
“[23] Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; [24] but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, exercising loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the LORD.”

3. IT IS NECESSARY FOR OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND MATURITY
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
“…But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'”
We nourish and keep our physical bodies strong and healthy with food, good food. Without food and the nutrients it contains, we become malnourished and our bodies grow weak and cannot function properly. In the same way, we nourish and feed ourselves with God’s word, which causes us to grow and mature spiritually. By feeding on God’s word, we will become mature Christians.
1 Peter 2:2
“…As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.”
Job 23:12 NKJV
“I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.”
As believers, we have a hunger that can only be satisfied by God’s word; anything else will leave us feeling hungry and weak.
Hebrews 5:12-14 NLT
“[12] You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. [13] For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. [14] Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.”
