Why We Must Read And Study The Bible (2)
We are discussing some of the reasons why it is necessary for us grow deeper in the Word by reading and studying our Bibles.
4. IT BUILDS UP FAITH IN US
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
We need faith to walk with God in a manner that pleases Him. In fact, our entire Christian walk is one of faith – faith in the God we do not see, but we believe exists, and came down to earth and gave His life for our salvation. Faith that He rose from the dead and He lives, and we can have a relationship with Him as our Father. ( Job 42:5 )
Romans 10:17
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Our faith, however, is built on the Word of God. As we grow in our knowledge of God’s word, and we learn more about Him and believe in Him (who He is and what He can do), our faith in God grows stronger and stronger.
Hebrews 11:1-2
“[1] Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. [2] For by it the men of old gained approval.”
The word of God is the foundation of our faith. It is our assurance and evidence of all God’s promises. Reading and studying the Word gives us a growing belief and confident assurance that God is with us, that He will never leave nor forsake us, that He will help and provide for us, that He will protect and deliver us, etc.
Our faith in God is a shield of defence against the enemy, and we need the word of God to build our faith in Him. ( Ephesians 6:16 )
5. IT HELPS US WALK IN RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PURITY.
God, our Father, expects us, His children, to live in a manner that is befitting and pleases Him. When we study scripture, it becomes a light to our path and gives us clarity of direction. As we obey and live God’s word we can overcome sin and temptations, and walk in purity and righteousness.
Psalm 119:9-11 NLT
“[9] How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. [10] I have tried hard to find you- don’t let me wander from your commands. [11] I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:105 NKJV
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
The word of God straightens and aligns, shapes and sharpens us. It exposes the works of the flesh in us and cleanses us. If we apply the word to our lives, it refines and moulds us into the image of Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
“[16] All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. [17] God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
Hebrew 4:12-13 (AMP)
“For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analysing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart. And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenceless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.”
If we are to grow in our knowledge of God, and become vessels that carry and reflect His glory, then we need the word of God to do an effective work in our lives, to transform us into His image and glory. With the word of God in our lives, we are cleansed from unrighteousness. ( John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26 )
