The Second Commandments For Worship
The second commandment that Jesus Christ gave us for worship is to “LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR AS YOURSELF.”
Mark 12:28-31 NLT
“[28] One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” [29] Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. [30] And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ [31] The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
Worship is not just a matter of loving God; actually, the true worship of God is demonstrated through our love for others, and how we relate with or treat them.
1 John 4:7-8 NKJV
“[7] Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. [8] He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
1 John 4:20-21 NKJV
[20] If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? [21] And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
Truly, our love for God and worship of Him is not observed or revealed in our pious and religious attitudes and actions, or our busyness in Church, but rather, in our relationship with and attitudes towards others.
There are too many people who act self-righteously and are busy in Church, but gossip, slander, envy, etc. These are not the qualities or characteristics of a true worshipper. A true worshipper will display the fruit of the Spirit in their relationship with others.
The truth is that how we relate with or treat or deal with others is what really reveals the depth of our worship, that is, the depth of our love towards God. IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!!
The Bible is consistent in answering the question “ Who may dwell and abide in God’s presence as a true worshipper?
Isaiah 33:14-16 NKJV
“[14] The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has seized the hypocrites: “Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?” [15] He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, he who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil: [16] he will dwell on high…”
Psalm 15:1-5 NLT
“[1] Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? [2] Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. [3] Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. [4] Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the LORD, and keep their promises even when it hurts. [5] Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.”
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Here is a reason for us to pause and consider how we relate with or treat others, especially, those we don’t like or consider unlovable Perhaps, those who are different from us or those we consider to be beneath us? How do we regard or relate with them? SELAH!!!
