Why We Must Read And Study The Bible (4)

Let us discuss a couple more reasons why it is necessary for us grow deeper in the word by reading and studying our Bibles.

8. IT HELPS US IN PRAYER & SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Knowing and standing on the word of God and declaring it is a key to effective prayer and spiritual warfare.

a. Firstly, the word of God is a tool we use in prayer. Apart from the many promises and testimonies of God’s power and victories won, the Bible gives us clear promises about our position, authority and victory in warfare. Read and search the scriptures to find out what God has said or promised and speak them forth as you engage with God in prayer.

For Further reading: Matthew 16:19; Matthew 18:18; Luke 10:19-20; Isaiah 54:16-17

b. Secondly, the word of God is also a weapon we use against the enemy. Satan cannot override or cancel God’s word. We can always use the word against him. Jesus demonstrated this when He was tempted by Satan. After His 40-day fast in the wilderness, Satan showed up and tempted Jesus to rebel against God’s plan. In each instant, Jesus declared the Word in response. The devil had no choice but to leave defeated.

Job 22:28
“You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.

Declaring, “It is written…” is especially effective in prayer and warfare. It is a very effective way of praying things into being and also turning the enemy back.

c. Finally, the Bible describes the word of God as follows, which we must learn to use effectively:

– Fire that burns. ( Jeremiah 5:14; 23:29 )
– A Hammer that breaks the rock. ( Jeremiah 23:29 )
– A Sword that cuts. ( Hebrews 4:12 )
– Water that washes and cleanses. ( Ephesians 5:26 )
– A Polisher that perfects. ( 2 Timothy 3:16-17 )

9. IT REVEALS JESUS CHRIST TO US.

This final point is the best reason for me to read and study the Bible! As the word of God, your Bible, is the foremost TANGIBLE manifestation of Jesus Christ you may ever experience and get to know, through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is because Jesus is the Word of God. The more you read, study and obey the word, the more you get acquainted with Jesus.

John 1:1-5 NKJV
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

John 1:14 NKJV
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

As the Word of God, Jesus is not only the Creator; He reveals the mind, intent, plans and purposes of God for humanity. Jesus, the Word of God, took on human form so that we can see and experience the goodness, mercy, grace, kindness and justice of God. Yes, through Jesus Christ, we can behold and experience the glory of God in our lives. ( 2 Corinthians 4:6 )

However, you cannot say you love Jesus and not love and obey the word. If you love Jesus, you will love the Word.

John 14:23-24 NKJV
“[23] Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. [24] He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.”

To love and obey the Word is to love Jesus. The Bible tells us that we love Him because He first loved us. Jesus Christ is the Word of God, and we can experience the Father deeper and more intimately by reading, studying and obeying the Word of God.

1 John 1:1-4 NLT
“[1] We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. [2] This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. [3] We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. [4] We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.”

THOUGHT: Do you now see why it is necessary for us to make the word of God a priority in our lives?

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2026: “BEHOLD JESUS CHRIST”

“When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. [13] And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. [14] His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. [15] His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. [16] He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.” [Revelation 1:12-16]
