A Requirement Of Our Priesthood (2)
One of the required duties of the priesthood is to minister to the people among whom they dwell, by teaching and instructing them in the laws and ways of God. In the Old Testament, priests were to teach and lead people to walk in the laws and ways, plans and purposes of God, and in righteousness.
Leviticus 10:10-11 NLT
“[10] You must distinguish between what is sacred and what is common, between what is ceremonially unclean and what is clean. [11] And you must teach the Israelites all the decrees that the LORD has given them through Moses.”
Malachi 2:6-7 NKJV
“[6] The law of truth was in his mouth, and injustice was not found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and equity, and turned many away from iniquity. [7] “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, and people should seek the law from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.”
As New Testament priests also, there is no difference in our role; it is our required duty to preach the gospel and disciple, build and edify the Church by teaching the sound doctrine of God’s word. When we have taken time and effort to disciple the believers, the Church shall disciple the nation.
2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”
Ezekiel 44:23 NKJV
_”And they shall teach My people the difference between the holy and the unholy, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.” _
Like the Old Testament priests, we are to teach and lead the world in God’s ways, plan and purposes. We are to uphold righteousness as a standard of life and expect the same from others, saved or unsaved, wherever we are. We are to be an example to all around us, by knowing the word of God, living according to its instructions, and teaching and showing others to do the same.
Titus 1:5-9 NLT
“[5] I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you. [6] An elder must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious. [7] A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money. [8] Rather, he must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. [9] He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.”
As the priesthood of God, we are to lead, guide and instruct our families, communities, and societies in the ways of God. We are to instruct the government and people in authority, saved or unsaved, to uphold righteousness and to live in the fear of God. It is important to note that all of this applies not just to the fivefold ministry, but to each and every believer in Christ. ( Ephesians 4:11-16 )
FOR REFLECTION
Sadly, whenever the priests departed from this role, the people went astray, and judgment came upon the land and the people. We, therefore, need to take a keen look, within ourselves, as individuals, and the Church and world around us, and consider whether we have been diligent and effective in our role as the priesthood of Jesus Christ in our families, communities, society and nations.
