A Requirement Of Our Priesthood (3)
Like the Old Testament priests, we are also required to teach and lead the world in God’s ways, plan and purposes. Whenever the priests failed in their role, the people went astray, and judgment came upon them and the land.
IGNORANT PRIESTS
This is why it is very dangerous, and a grave sin before God, when the priests are ignorant, and do not study, practise and teach the people to obey the laws of God.
Hosea 4:6 NKJV
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
We cannot afford to be ignorant of God’s word. However, unfortunately, too many people do not read the scriptures, or study them, or obey them, let alone teach others to do the same! Many lack knowledge, understanding and revelation of God’s Word; the entire Holy Scriptures seem like a closed book!
Isaiah 29:11-12 NKJV
“[11] The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, “Read this, please.” And he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.” [12] Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, “Read this, please.” And he says, “I am not literate.””
AN INVALUABLE LESSON
There is a story in the Book of 2 Kings that teaches an invaluable lesson about God wanting people to walk in His ways of righteousness, the repercussions of not doing so, and the role of the priesthood in all of this.
In this story, despite warnings from various prophets, the children of Israel had turned away from the worship and ways of the LORD and persisted in sin and rebellion. Therefore, the LORD removed His presence from them, gave them up to the king of Assyria, who exiled them from their land to Assyria.
After removing the people of Israel from their land, the king of Assyria replaced them with people from other nations. However, something occurred to teach us an invaluable lesson that God takes His word seriously and demands that all, irrespective of our nationality, are required to obey and walk in it. The story also shows us the role of the priesthood in ensuring that people are taught the word of God.
2 Kings 17:24-28 NLT
“[24] The king of Assyria transported groups of people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim and resettled them in the towns of Samaria, replacing the people of Israel. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns. [25] But since these foreign settlers did not worship the LORD when they first arrived, the LORD sent lions among them, which killed some of them. [26] So a message was sent to the king of Assyria: “The people you have sent to live in the towns of Samaria do not know the religious customs of the God of the land. He has sent lions among them to destroy them because they have not worshiped him correctly.” [27] The king of Assyria then commanded, “Send one of the exiled priests back to Samaria. Let him live there and teach the new residents the religious customs of the God of the land.” [28] So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria returned to Bethel and taught the new residents how to worship the LORD.”
It is the calling and mandate of the Church, as the royal priesthood, to teach and disciple the people within their nations to walk in righteousness, justice and peace, according to the word and ways of God.
Therefore, we cannot afford to be ignorant of God’s word and ways. We must be diligent to know and rightly apply the word of truth so that we can teach others to do the same.
Micah 4:2 NKJV
“Many nations shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion the law shall go forth, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.” AMEN
