What Do You Need? (2)
Apart from the Holy Spirit, determination, commitment and time, you also need the following to be able to study the Word of God effectively.
3. A BIBLE
The first step to studying the word is understanding; therefore, acquire at least one bible written in a language you can read and understand. Some people think that the King James Version is the perfect bible, perhaps because the language is antiquated. However, the English is difficult to understand; therefore, you would still need another version to help you understand.
Let’s go over the Gideon’s International Statement about the Bible again:
_“The Bible contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveller’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. _
“Christ is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgement, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labour, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.”
Versions Of The Bible
There are several versions of the Bible to choose from e.g. New King James Version, English Standard Version, Amplified Bible, New American Standard Bible, New Living Translation, etc. Let’s discuss the available Bible study resources next time.
4. A NOTEBOOK
Acquire a notebook and pen to write down your notes, that is, the things you learn as you study. If you have a smartphone or tablet, you may use the notepad on it. Whichever one you use, always have a notebook ready.
If possible, write down everything that you learn, because you can use your notes to teach others later. Most of what I teach is from notes that I have made over the years.
5. PRAYER
Start praying and asking the Holy Spirit to help you, especially to give you the grace to be committed and faithful. Pray also and ask Him to give you understanding and knowledge. Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge. Pray and ask Him to give you wisdom to apply the Word of God to your life.
Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV
“[7] Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. [8] For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Whilst getting all the above in place, simply start reading your Bible. Start by reading the Gospel of John. The book of John gives us such a great revelation about Jesus Christ as the Word and Son of God.
