Growing Deeper In The Word (19)
Monday 2 March 2026
The Bible Was Lived, Not Just Written
As you determine to read and study the word, you must have this statement firmly embedded in your mind and heart – “THE BIBLE WAS LIVED, NOT JUST WRITTEN.”
The Bible is not fictional. The people in it were real people who lived and faced the same challenges and experiences as us. We can learn from them and their walk with or away from God, their failures and victories, challenges and successes. ( Hebrews chapters 11 – 12 )
HOW DO I START?
Before you start, designate a time each day for your Bible reading and studying. Be consistent with the allocated time of day, guard it diligently and stay focused, and it will soon become a habit.
1. Choose A Book Of The Bible
You may start off by choosing a book of the Bible. The Gospels (especially John), the books of Psalms and Proverbs are all highly recommended. Or you may choose a topic, e.g. Faith, the Holy Spirit, Prayer, Worship, etc.
2. Talk To The Holy Spirit
Each day, before you start reading, pray and ask the Holy Spirit, according to Jesus’ promise, to help you understand what you read and give you the knowledge and wisdom to practise it. Ask the Holy Spirit to let the word come alive to you, as you read. Remember, He is your Teacher and Helper.
3. Start Reading
Read a portion each time – a paragraph or chapter at a time. You may read several chapters at a time, just to acquaint yourself with the scriptures. However, to study, you must take things slowly and read a portion at a time.
4. Reflect
Once you’ve read it through, pause and reflect on what you’ve read for a moment. Then read again, this time, pausing to consider it verse by verse.
5. Do You Understand?
Do you understand what the scripture is saying? If yes, write what you think it is saying in your notebook. If you don’t understand it, read it again in another version of the Bible, perhaps New Living Translation or Easy To Read Bible.
It is okay, if you still don’t understand it. Talk to the Father and ask Him to help you understand it, then leave it for the next time.
6. Pray!
Pray and thank God for His word and ask Him to continue to speak to you and give you understanding
7. Reflect Again!
During the day, as you go about your daily activities, ‘bring’ your mind back to what you read and continue to reflect on it.
John 1:14 NKJV
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”
This is what God wants for us: that His word would be formed in us, as we adapt our lives to live in obedience to His commandments and statutes
Therefore, as you read the scriptures, reflect and meditate on them, and confess them (speak them forth). Begin to look for ways in which you can apply it to your life. Always remember – obedience to the word of God is the key to growth.
Like all lifestyles, knowing, living and growing in God’s word takes a while to develop so be patient but diligent and persistent, taking things one day at a time.

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2026: “BEHOLD JESUS CHRIST”
“When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. [13] And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. [14] His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. [15] His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. [16] He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.” [Revelation 1:12-16]
