Break Down The Word (2)
These are further general guidelines, intended to help you study a specific book, chapter or passage of the bible. Remember, you cannot read an entire chapter or paragraph (or even some verses), and expect to understand and assimilate it all at once. Breaking down the word helps a great deal.
FURTHER GUIDELINES
1. As you read pause and meditate (ponder, deliberate, consider, reflect, mull over, and turn over in your mind) on what you’re reading and how relevant it is to your life.
2. Make notes as you study. This will help you remember what you have learnt.
3. Try and memorise key scriptures as you read (some of which literally ‘jump out at you,’ as the Holy Spirit highlights and speaks to you through them).
4. Always remember, “The Bible was lived, not written”. The people in it were real people who lived and faced the same challenges and experiences as you. Learn from them and their walk with God. (Hebrews 11 and 12)
5. You may learn to use a concordance or bible commentary, if you have access to one, to help you understand as you study.
6. Below are several possible questions that could help you as you study the bible. You may write your answers down in your notebook.
-What does this passage say?
-What happened? Was it a problem, an occasion or incident?
-Who was involved?
-What was the outcome/how was it resolved?
-What does this passage mean?
-What is God telling me?
-How am I encouraged and strengthened?
-How does this apply to me? What will I do about it?
-How can I be changed, so I can learn and grow?
-What is in the way of these precepts affecting me?
-What can I model and teach?
-What does God want me to share with someone?
7. Rely on the Holy Spirit to give you the knowledge, understanding and wisdom that you need to study effectively. It will soon become a habit and lifestyle, as you continue to follow the guidelines daily.
After reading these guideline, open up a passage in the Bible, and try and apply the above guidelines, as you read. Don’t worry if things seem slow at this time. Just continue practising it and it will soon become a habit.
We shall discuss practical examples of breaking down the word next time.
