Break Down The Word (3)
Let’s now look at some practical examples of how you can break down the scriptures when studying.
A. BREAK DOWN THE VERSES
One way in which you can “break down the word” is to first break down the verses. Read your selected passage; if possible, read your selected scriptures in two or three different translations of the bible. For this illustration, we shall use 1 Peter 1:17-18 and read it in both the New King James Bible and the New Living Translation.
1 Peter 1:17-21 NKJV
“[17] And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; [18] knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, [19] but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. [20] He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you [21] who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”
1 Peter 1:17-20 NLT
“[17] And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.” [18] For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. [19] It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. [20] God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.”
NOW LET’S BREAK DOWN 1 PETER 1:17-21
1. Remember
2. The heavenly Father to whom you pray
3. Has no favourites.
4. He will judge or reward you according to what you do.
5. So, you must live in reverent fear of Him
6. During your time here as “temporary residents.”
7. For you know that God paid a ransom to save you…
8. He saved you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. Your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers…
9. And the ransom was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value….
10. The ransom was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
11. God chose Him as your ransom long before the world began,
12. But now in these last days He has been revealed for your sake.
Did you notice that we have not added or subtracted anything from the scripture? Now, try it; pick a passage and break down the verses to see what you can learn from it.
