Break Down The Word (4)

We are looking at some practical examples of how you can break down the scriptures when studying. We started by breaking down the verses to help you understand them better.

BREAKING DOWN 1 PETER 1:17-21

1 Peter 1:17-20 NLT
“[17] And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.” [18] For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. [19] It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. [20] God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.”

We first read the above scripture in two translations and then broke down the verses without adding or subtracting anything from them. However, by simply breaking down the scripture, several things have become clearer…

1. ABOUT GOD – God is our heavenly Father; He has no favourites and will judge or reward us individually, according to what we do; God paid a ransom to save us, not with gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

2. ABOUT JESUS CHRIST – Jesus Christ is the sinless, spotless Lamb of God; He was chosen by the Father to be a ransom for us, long before the world began. He has now been revealed for our sake.

3. ABOUT US – We are temporary residents on earth; therefore, we must live in reverential fear of our heavenly Father; a heavy ransom was paid by Him to save us from the empty life we were born into and have inherited. We have been ransomed from the aimless conduct received by tradition from our fathers, and must abandon and reject them. ( Matthew 15:1-6 ). We can now live in the fullness of life that is found in Jesus Christ.

See how much truth we’ve extracted and learnt from just four verses of scripture, by simply breaking the verses down, without adding or subtracting? And see how easy it was to do that!

It is only after you’ve done this that you can begin to think of practical examples of how this scripture works and applies to your life. For example, you may reflect and also ask the Holy Spirit to show you what “aimless traditions” have been handed down to you from your culture, and how they work against the word of God in your life. You can then ask for the grace to make changes in your life, as the Holy Spirit shows you.

This is how living the Christian life gets exciting, meaningful and productive. Amen!!!

Fulfilling Our Theme For 2026: “BEHOLD JESUS CHRIST”

“When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. [13] And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. [14] His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. [15] His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. [16] He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.” [Revelation 1:12-16]
