Break Down The Word (5)
Another way to break the word down is to extract and write down what lessons you can learn from the particular scripture. Below is an example of how to do it. (You may also search for parallel scriptures using online resources like www.biblehub.com). Our chosen scripture is 1st Timothy Chapter 1.
LESSONS FROM 1ST TIMOTHY 1
First take a moment to read through the entire chapter. Now let’s see what lessons we can learn from it.
1. WARNINGS (verses 3-4)
* Be careful not to teach any other doctrine.
* Be careful not to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, because they cause disputes rather than godly edification in faith.
* Teach others to also be careful.
2. LOVE (verse 5)
“Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith…”
* The purpose of the commandment is
* Love from a pure heart
* Love from a good conscience
* Love from sincere faith
Romans 13:8-10 NKJV
“[8] Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. [9] For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” [10] Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilment of the law.”
Matthew 22:36-40 NKJV
“[36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” [37] Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ [40] On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””
3. THE LAW (Verses 8-11)
The purpose of the Law is clearly stated in verses 8-11 (NLT)
* We know that the law is good when used correctly.
* For the law was not intended for people who do what is right.
* It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.
* The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers.
* The law is for those who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.
So far, we’ve learnt that 1 Timothy Chapter 1 admonishes us about doctrine,, and teaches us about love and the purpose of the Law.
